Journal 2

I first started using Microsoft Word around second grade. My elementary gifted program wanted the students to learn how to type and use Word. We would spend time every week working in the computer lab on these tasks. I am better at using Word, however, I prefer google docs because it is more organized and easier to use on multiple devises.

The most important ISTE standard to me is Design. Being able to be creative and express yourself through digital media is important. In life we will all need to be able to use technology to design something. From a resume, newsletter, poster, or social media post. Being able to design online is an important skill and it strengthens students creativity.

I agree with the term digital native to describe kids born from 2010 and on. I think being a digital native really has to do with Social economic status not generation. While yes most high schools use computers now being a digital native is more likely for students of higher economic status. It can especially be difficult when teachers try to teach digital natives because they themselves are not digital natives. Most the time students have to help teachers use technology. Most of my teachers would not ask for help and waste class time trying to fix the problem themselves, its pretty aggravating.

Badges are like getting a treat for reaching a goal. They have no real meaning but can make a person feel better and use a source more because they got rewarded. I have received badges for websites like Duolingo but I have never shared them. I think it just tricks people into using a product or site more. While they can be effective I do not personally use them.

  1. Hi Brooke, I enjoyed your Blog Journal and agree with everything you wrote. I also prefer Google Docs instead of Microsoft Word, due to the autosave feature and how much more organized the software is. For the ISTE Standard, I also put Design because I feel that it is important to be able to be creative and design new ideas for your students. As for the badges, I completely agree with you that they can help boost someone's motivation and help them reach their goals.
